1. (case suffix) at. Used to form the adessive case.

   A háznál várt rám. - He was waiting for me at the house.

Usage notes

• (case suffix) Harmonic variants:

  -nál is added to back vowel words. Final -a changes to -á-.

  a hegy lába ‎(“the foot of the mountain”) → a hegy lábánál — at the foot of the mountain

  -nél is added to front vowel words. Final -e changes to -é-.

  az ágy feje ‎(“the head of the bed”) → az ágy fejénél — at the head of the bed

1. (personal suffix) Used to form the second-person singular present tense of verbs (conditional mood, indefinite conjugation).

   olvas ‎(“to read”) → Olvasnál valamit? — Would you read something?

• (personal suffix) Harmonic variants:

  -nál is added to most back vowel verbs

  vár ‎(“to wait”) → várnál ‎(“you would wait”)

  -nél is added to most front vowel verbs

  kér ‎(“to ask”) → kérnél ‎(“you would ask”)

  -anál is added to back vowel verbs ending in two consonants or in a long vowel + t (exceptions áll, száll, varr, forr, lát)

  mond ‎(“to say something”) → mondanál ‎(“you would say something”)

  tanít ‎(“to teach”) → tanítanál ‎(“you would teach”)

  -enél is added to front vowel verbs ending in two consonants or in a long vowel + t

  fest ‎(“to paint”) → festenél ‎(“you would paint”)

  segít ‎(“to help”) → segítenél ‎(“you would help”)
