Etymology

The reading comes from 御器被 (ごきかぶ), which came from 御器 (ごき) "dish" +  (かぶ) "biting". Up until the Meiji era, this used to be the word for "cockroach". Due to typographical errors, the か became omitted. The original form still exists today in certain dialects, and furthermore there are variations of it across dialects as well.(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

Pronunciation

  • (Irregular reading)
  • (Tokyo) きぶり [gòkíbúrí] (Heiban - [0])[1][2]
  • IPA(key): [ɡo̞kʲibɯᵝɾi]
