Verb

過ぎる (intransitive, ichidan conjugation, hiragana すぎる, romaji sugiru)

  1. to pass; to go beyond
    あの ()もおもちゃで (あそ) (とし) ()ぎるころだ。
    Ano ko mo omocha de asobu toshi wa sugiru koro da.
    He will soon be past playing with toys.
  2. to elapse; to exceed
  3. (auxiliary) too, too much (verb)
    その (くつ) (たか)すぎる
    Sono kutsu wa takasugiru.
    These shoes are too expensive.
     (おお)すぎるからトランクに (はい)らないぞ。
    Ōkisugiru kara toranku ni hairanai zo.
    Dude, it isn't going to fit into the trunk because it's too big.
    あまり (さけ) () ()ぎるのは、危険 (きけん)だ。

Usage notes

  • When used as an auxiliary, it is usually written in kana: すぎる
  • Can also be attached to adjectives in some situations
  • When すぎる is attached to the end of other verbs and adjectives is denotes the meaning of "too much".
  • (verbs) You attach the verb directly to the stem or the continuative form (連用形) of the verb:
    飲みすぎる (のみすぎる, nomisugiru); to drink too much
    食べすぎる (たべすぎる, tabesugiru); to eat too much
    すぎる (すぎる, nesugiru); to sleep too much
  • (na-adjectives) The verb is simply attached to the adjectives:
    静かすぎる (しずかすぎる, shizukasugiru); too quiet.
  • (i-adjectives) You remove the last (i) before attaching the verb:
    大きすぎる (おおきすぎる, ōkisugiru); too big
    すぎる (たかすぎる, takasugiru); too expensive
