Etymology

From Proto-Baltic *uodas, from Proto-Indo-European *ōd-, *ēd- ‎(“to eat, to bite”), whence also ēst ‎(“to eat”). Cognates include Lithuanian úodas. The original meaning was thus “eater, biter.”^[1]
