Glyph origin

Historical forms of the character
Oracle bone script Bronze inscriptions Large seal script Small seal script

Pictogram (象形) :   +   – head of a kneeling person, emphasising “head”.

and (OC *hljuʔ, *hljus) were originally the same pictographic character with the same meaning of “head”, and the graphical difference was that also included the body in addition to the head of the person.

By the Eastern Han Dynasty [25–220 CE], has been used as an alternative popular form of (OC *hljeb, *leb, “leaf; page”) to mean “sheet; page (of paper)”, which is its main meaning today.

The original sense of “head” is preserved in the radical (“body part”), used in characters such as (“head”), (“neck”).
