From Proto-Indo-European *h₂r̥-tu-, *h₂r̥-ti-, based on *h₂er- (to fix, put together), whence առնեմ (aṙnem). Cognates include Ancient Greek ἀρτύς (artús, arrangement), ἀρτύνω (artúnō, to arrange, to fit), Latin ars (art), artus (joint), Sanskrit ऋतु (ṛtú).
