Etymology

Possibly a transcription of Sanskrit मोह (moha, folly), used as a slang term among monks[1][2][3]. Alternately, arising from the same root as Old Japanese (woko, modern oko, stupidity, ridiculousness), also sometimes used as ateji for Sanskrit मोह (moha).

The kanji are ateji (当て字). The kana spelling (バカ) is more common.
