Etymology

(san, acid) + (so, element), calque of Dutch zuurstof (oxygen; sourstuff). Compare German Sauerstoff, Luxembourgish Sauerstoff.

Considered to be used first in Udagawa Yōan's (宇田川榕菴, 1798 – 1846) book Introduction to Chemistry (舎密開宗, Seimi Kaisō), a compilation of various scientific books in Dutch.
