Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *yáwgas, from Proto-Indo-European *yéwgos. Compare the verbal root युनक्ति (yunakti, to yoke), from Proto-Indo-European *yewg- (to yoke, harness, join), whence also Proto-Indo-European noun *yugóm that gave Sanskrit युग (yugá).
