Arabic

Conjunction

أَنْ (ʾan)

  1. to, that
    أُرِيدُ أَنْ آكُلَ.
    ʾurīdu ʾan ʾākula.
I want to eat. (lit. I want that I eat.)
    أُرِيدُ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ.
    ʾurīdu ʾan yaʾkula.
I want him to eat. (lit. I want that he eat.)

Usage notes

  • أَنْ (ʾan) must be followed immediately by a verb in the subjunctive mood. The subject, if mentioned, must then be placed after the verb in the nominative case. The only exception to this rule is that a verb after بَعْدَ أَنْ (baʿda ʾan, after (conj.)) takes the past tense if the event described has already occurred. (If the event has not yet occurred, then the verb after بَعْدَ أَنْ (baʿda ʾan)) takes the subjunctive.) See also بَعْدَ (baʿda).
    اِنْتَخَبَ الشَّعْبُ رَئِيسًا جَدِيدًا بَعْدَ أَنْ تَمَّتْ كِتَابَةُ الدُّسْتُور.
intaḵaba š-šaʿbu raʾīsan jadīdan baʿda ʾan tammat kitābatu d-dustūr.
The people elected a new president after the constitution was written.
    سَيَنْتَخِبُ الشَّعْبُ رَئِيسًا جَدِيدًا بَعْدَ أَنْ تَتِمَّ كِتَابَةُ الدُّسْتُور.
sayantaḵibu š-šaʿbu raʾīsan jadīdan baʿda ʾan tatimma kitābatu d-dustūr.
The people will elect a new president after the constitution is written.
  • In addition to بَعْدَ (baʿda) above, أَنْ (ʾan) may be used with the preposition قَبْلَ (qabla, before) to form a conjunction.
    بَعْدَ الْقَرَارِbaʿda l-qarāri ― after the decision, after deciding
    بَعْدَ أَنْ يُقَرِّرَbaʿda ʾan yuqarrira ― after he decides
    بَعْدَ أَنْ قَرَّرَbaʿda ʾan qarrara ― after he decided
    قَبْلَ الْقَرَارِqabla l-qarāri ― before the decision, before deciding
قَبْلَ أَنْ يُقَرِّرَqabla ʾan yuqarrira ― before he decides; before he decided
