שָׁתָה • ‎(shatá) ‎(pa'al construction, infinitive לִשְׁתּוֹת, future יִשְׁתֶּה)

1. to drink
   • Genesis 9:21, with translation of the King James Version:

     וַיֵּשְׁתְּ מִן־הַיַּיִן וַיִּשְׁכָּר וַיִּתְגַּל בְּתוֹךְ אָהֳלֹה׃‎

     And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

   • a. 217 CE, Mishnah, Berachot 6:8:

     הַשּׁוֹתֶה מַיִם לִצְמָאוֹ אוֹמֵר שֶׁהַכֹּל נִהְיָה בִּדְבָרוֹ.‎

     One who is drinking water for his thirst says, “by whose word everything came to be.”

   • 922, Saʿadia Gaʾon, איגרת אל תלמידים במצרים בעניין הלוח

     וּבַל יֹאכְלוּן וְיִשׁתּוּן וְיַעֲשׂוּן מְלָאכָה בְּיוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים.‎

     And let them not eat and drink and do work on Yom Kippur.

2. (slang) to drink alcohol

   אם שותים, לא נוהגים.‎

   If you drink, do not drive
