Old Armenian

Etymology 1

Verb

տալ (tal)

  1. infinitive of տամ (tam)
Declension

Etymology 2

From Proto-Indo-European *ǵəlōw- (sister-in-law), which must have given *ծալ (*cal), but the anlaut was modified under the influence of տագր (tagr). Cognates include Ancient Greek γάλως (gálōs), Latin glos, Old Church Slavonic зълъва (zŭlŭva) (Russian золовка (zolovka)) and perhaps Phrygian γέλαρος. Ačaṙyan accepts this etymology, but notes that Laz და (da, sister), plural და́ლეფე (dálepe), which point to a stem დალ- (dal-), “should not be forgotten”.
