Etymology

According to Ačaṙyan, perhaps a “Caucasian” borrowing (Kartvelian? Northeast Caucasian?); compare Georgian ხაზი ‎(xazi, “line, row”), Laz ხაზ ‎(xaz, “to draw a line”), Udi խազ ‎(xaz, “line”).

Alternatively, according to Martirosyan, perhaps an Iranian borrowing, ultimately going back to Proto-Iranian *xad-s-, sigmatic aorist of *xad- ‎(“to beat, inflict a wound”); compare Manichaean Parthian xʾz- ‎(*xāz-, “to devour”), Sanskrit खिदति ‎(khinati, “to tear; to press down”).
