Via other European languages, ultimately a borrowing from Medieval Latin manuscriptum (writing by hand), from Latin manu (hand[ablative]) and scriptus, the past participle of scribō (I write), apparently a calque of Germanic origin (cf. earlier Middle High German hantschrift, hantgeschrift, Old English handġewrit (what is written by hand, deed, contract, manuscript), Old Norse handrit (manuscript)).
