Etymology

Probably from Latin ferīre, present active infinitive of feriō (strike). Other less likely explanations include a Vulgar Latin *auferīre, from an alteration of auferre (as with suferi < suffere). Compare Aromanian afirescu, afiriri. Some have tried to connect it, at least in the archaic or regional sense of "to celebrate a holiday", with a Vulgar Latin *fērīre, from fēriae.[1]

  5. (archaic, regional) to respect or keep (a holiday), celebrate
