From West Proto-Germanic *aiskōną, from Proto-Indo-European *ais-. Cognate with Old Frisian āskia, Old Saxon ēscon, Old High German eiscōn. The Indo-European root is also the source of Latin aeruscare, Old Armenian այց (aycʿ), Slavic *jьskati (Old Church Slavonic искати (iskati), Russian искать (iskatʹ)), Baltic *eiška- (Lithuanian ieškoti).
