  • Sense 1 was borrowed in the beginning of the 20th century from Rotwelsch, a cant or thieves' argot, in which its verb zinkenen is documented since the 19th century.[1] Sense 2 is probably derived from the Rotwelsch locution Zinken stecken “to drop a hint, to tip-off, to give a signal”.[1]
