Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-Kartvelian *ṗir-. The root is პ- (ṗ-). Georgian -ირ- (-ir-) and Mingrelian -იჯ- (-iǯ-) are determiner suffixes. Compare cognates: Mingrelian პიჯი (ṗiǯi), Laz პიჯი (ṗiǯi) and Svan პილ (ṗil, lip)
