Etymology

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *na-(n/t) ‎(“sick; evil spirit”). Cognate with Mizo nâ, nat ‎(“ill, sick; illness”), Tibetan ན ‎(na, “ill, sick”), Sichuan Yi ꆅ ‎(na, “hurt, pain, sore; illness”), Lisu ꓠꓻ ‎(nɑ, “sore, sick, ill”), and Chinese 難 ‎(nán, “bad, unpleasant”). Doublet of နတ် ‎(nat, “nat spirit”).
