จำเลย

Thai

Noun

จำเลย (jam-ləəi)

  1. (law) defendant; defending party.

Antonyms

Usage notes

  • In the Thai legal system, the term is only used in the courts of justice. In the administrative courts, a defending party is called ผู้ถูกฟ้องคดี, literally "one against whom a case is brought". In the Constitutional Court, such a party is known as ผู้ถูกร้อง, literally "one against whom a petition is filed".
  • The term can be used figuratively to refer to a person who suffers from a false or unfair accusation or treatment. For example, the expression จำเลยสังคม (jam-ləəi sǎng-kom), which is literally translated as "defendant of the society" and may be translated as "victim of the society", refers to someone whom the society, without proof, prior trial, or reasonable grounds, accuses of or considers to have done something wrong.
