Etymology

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Persian کوره (kure, furnace) and Georgian კერა (ḳera), კერაკი (ḳeraḳi), კერაკანი (ḳeraḳani), also from Iranian.

An inheritance from Proto-Indo-European *g(e)u-ro- (glowing coal), with Proto-Germanic *kulą and Irish gúal as cognates, has also been proposed, but this is unconvincing.
