Old Armenian

Etymology

Perhaps a Classical Syriac borrowing. Compare Syriac ܩܠܦܐ (qəlāfāʼ, sheet of a book), ܩܠܦ (qəlaf, to remove the skin, bark), ܩܠܦܬܐ (qəlāftāʼ, husk, scale, shell). Another rendering of the word has survived in dialects as կլեպ (klep).

On the other hand, J̌ahukyan argues for a native Proto-Indo-European origin.

According to Ačaṙean, Georgian ყვლეფა (q̇vlepa) and Laz ღლეპა (ɣleṗa) are borrowed from Armenian.
