From Proto-Indo-European *dʰm̥bʰ- (to dig) + -ան (-an). Cognate with Ancient Greek τάφος (táphos, tomb), ταφή (taphḗ), θάπτω (tháptō, bury), Old Prussian dambo (ground). Martirosyan argues for a Mediterranean-Pontic substrate origin.
