Etymology

From Middle Iranian *gōšak, from Old Iranian *gauša-ka- (literally listener), from Proto-Iranian *gauš-, on which see گوش (gôš). Akin to Middle Persian gwšk' (gōšag, spy), Ossetian хъу́сӕг (qúsæg) / и-гъосӕг (i-ǧosæg, listener), Georgian loanword გუშაგი (gušagi, guardsman) and Aramaic 𐡂𐡅𐡔𐡊𐡀 (gwškʾ, a Persian official: spy), an Old Persian loanword.
