Old Armenian

Etymology

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂rǵnto- (silver), which yielded Proto-Armenian *arcant-, whose ending was modified under the influence of երկաթ (erkatʿ, iron). In this case cognate with Latin argentum, Sanskrit रजत (rajatá, silver; silvery), Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀𐬙𐬀 (ərəzata, silver), Old Persian 𐎠𐎼𐎭𐎫 (ardata, silver), Old Irish argat and Ancient Greek ἄργυρος (árguros).

Alternatively, according to Martirosyan, a very old Indo-Iranian (3rd–2nd millennium BC) or an Old Iranian (first half of the 1st millennium BC) borrowing.

See also արծնեմ (arcnem) and արծարծեմ (arcarcem).
