Etymology

From the preposition առ (aṙ, by, at, near) + -ա- (-a-) + Proto-Indo-European *stel- (broad, to broaden) and cognate with Old Church Slavonic стеля (stelja, roof); or from Proto-Indo-European *stel- (to put, place). In fact, the two Proto-Indo-European roots may be related.
