From Old Turkic 𐰕𐰖 (y¹z, summer), from Proto-Turkic *jāŕ, possibly from Proto-Altaic *ni̯ā́ŕà (young; spring, summer).[1] Cognate with Chuvash ҫур (śur, spring), Yakut саас (saas, spring), Tuvan час (čas, spring), Kazakh жаз (jaz, summer). Compare Hungarian nyár (summer), a possible r-Turkic (Bulgar) borrowing.
