Cognate with Old English wund (English wound), Old Dutch wunda (Dutch wond), Old Frisian wunde, Old High German wunta (German Wunde), Old Norse und (Icelandic und), Gothic 𐍅𐌿𐌽𐌳𐍃 adj. The Indo-European root is also the source of Welsh ym-wan ‘fight’, Baltic *vati- (Lithuanian vòtis).
