The expected outcome of Old High Germanscuola would be šūl in southern Moselle Franconian, and šōl in northern Moselle Franconian and Ripuarian. The actual vocalism, namely šōl in the very south, šul elsewhere, implies a form Old High German *scōla through (re-)adaptation to Latinschola. This would also explain LuxembourgishSchoul (see there).
