Etymology

From Old Spanish monneca, from a pre-Roman language, possibly a pre-Indo-European substrate. Compare Basque muno ‎(“colina”). Its original meaning was 'protuberance', from which both senses of 'wrist' and 'doll' come. Compare Spanish moño ‎(“a bow, ribbon”) and muñón ‎(“stump”).
