From Vulgar Latin*mentionica, from Late Latinmentio, mentionis (in the sense of "lie" rather than "mention"), probably formed from haplology of a root *mentītiō, from mentītus, past participle of mentior. Compare also Italian menzogna and Old French mensoigne, from a different root, and Romanian minciună.
