Most likely a contraction of either Latin mītificus (mild, soft, gentle), based on mītis (mild, mellow), or of mītigatus (softened), from mītigō (I make soft). Note, however, that similar forms exist in other European languages (compare English meek, Gothic 𐌼𐌿𐌺𐍃 (muks) and Old Norse mjúkr (soft, gentle), and Greek μαλακός (malakós, soft).
