Most likely a contraction of either Latin mītificus ‎(“mild, soft, gentle”), based on mītis ‎(“mild, mellow”), or of mītigatus ‎(“softened”), from mītigō ‎(“I make soft”). Note, however, that similar forms exist in other European languages (compare English meek, Gothic 𐌼𐌿𐌺𐍃 ‎(muks) and Old Norse mjúkr ‎(“soft, gentle”), and Greek μαλακός ‎(malakós, “soft”).
