1. (law) In the law of evidence, the power of a court to deem the burden of proof to be established as to a particular fact without the introduction of evidence, because the fact is one that is a matter of common knowledge, or is readily demonstrated by reference to sources of unquestionable authority.

   If an attorney were to ask the court to admit into evidence the fact that a party can not have traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles without crossing several state lines, or that July 4, 2000 fell on a Tuesday, the court would likely take judicial notice of the fact.
