Either from Latin classis (“section, class”), or from clausum (“enclosed space”).
Possibly from a Vulgar Latin *classum, derivative of Late Latin conclassāre, or from Latin classicum, with the sense of a "signal for mustering". Alternatively, derived from the second etymology below, with the sense of brothel.
