Etymology

Middle French chaloppe ‎(“a sort of flat-bottomed boat”), of uncertain origin. Possibly from an apheresis of Old French eschalope ‎(“shell”), used figuratively; or from Dutch sloep, although the Dutch word is attested later. German Schaluppe and English shallop are from the French.
