Etymology

Originally the plural form of a no longer used singular term baile, from the same stem as baidīt “to scare” (q.v.): Proto-Baltic *bai with an extra -l, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰoi-, the o grade of *bʰei- “to hit.” Cognates include Lithuanian bailùs (afraid), Sanskrit भीरु (bhīrú-, afraid).[1]
