The chamber, or one of the two chambers, of the heart, by which the blood is received and transmitted to the ventricle or ventricles; – so called from its resemblance to the auricle or external ear of some quadrupeds. See

The auricles of the heart are two muscular bags, situated at the base, serving as diverticula for the blood, during the diastole. They resemble the auricle of the ear, and cover the ventricles of the heart, like caps. Their systole of the heart, and vice versa.
