ardh +-je. Compare Hittite 𒄩𒅈𒁺(ḫardu-, “offspring, descendant”), Old Church Slavonicродити(roditi, “give birth, originate”), and perhaps (Old) Armenian որդի(ordi, “child, offspring”). Possibly from the same root of hardhi, with a sense development similar to Proto-Germanic *stamniz meaning both ‘stem, tree stalk’ and ‘tribe, lineage’.
