Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *portiyo-, from the root *per-, *por- (to give birth) whence also Latin pario (bring forth, give birth) and Old Armenian որթ (ortʿ, calf). Among cognates compare in particular Sanskrit पृथुक (pṛthuka, boy; the young of any animal), Ancient Greek πόρτις (pórtis, bull-calf; boy) and Latin partus (birth; offspring).
