From Proto-Germanic *aftrą, *aftrē, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂epoteros, whence also Old English æfter, Old High German aftar. Compare also eptir. Proto-Germanic *aftrē is probably related to Proto-Germanic *afteraz, Proto-Germanic *aftraz, Proto-Germanic *afarē.
