Etymology

târgu(l) ‎(“market”) + Mureș, or "market(place) on the Mureș river". Known as Marosvásárhely in Hungarian, with the same meaning, named so in the early 17th century. Also known as Neumarkt am Mieresch in German (Nai Mark or Nai Muark in the local Transylvanian Saxon), and was documented in Medieval Latin as Novum Forum Siculorum, from the name of the Székely people.
