Latvian

Moldova (Eiropā)
Moldovas karogs

Etymology

Borrowing from Romanian Moldova, from the name of the Moldova river. The origin of this word is unclear. The suffix -ova is probably of Slavic origin. The stem may come from Gothic 𐌼𐌿𐌻𐌳𐌰 (mulda, dust, mud) (compare the river Mulde in Germany, and also Moldau, the German name of the Czech river Vltava). Or it may be related to Romanian molid (spruce), though the loss of the i in this word is difficult to explain.

A folk etymology, mentioned by Dimitrie Cantemir, derives it from Molda, the name of Price Dragoș's dog who drowned in the Moldova River during a hunt for aurochs, prompting the prince to name the river after him.

Etymology

Possibly ultimately from Gothic 𐌼𐌿𐌻𐌳𐌰 (mulda, dust, mud); compare the river Mulde in Germany and Moldau, the German name of the river Vltava, which may be of related origin. A folk etymology, according to Dimitrie Cantemir, derives it from the name of the Moldova River, which was supposedly named by Prince Dragoș after his hound, Molda, who drowned in it while attempting to hunt an aurochs. Other attempts have been made to link it to molid (spruce), but the phonetic transition seems uncertain. The suffix -ova seems to be of Slavic origin.
