Etymology

Possibly ultimately from a Turkic word barasu, meaning "white water" with a Slavic suffix -ov, or from an Old Slavic name Brasa; compare the Hungarian name for the city, Brassó, from the same source. The city was known as Kronstadt ("Crown City") in the local Transylvanian Saxon (German) language, and Corona ‎(“crown”) in Medieval Latin.
