Etymology

The older spelling is -ուրհի (-urhi). Probably an Iranian borrowing, but the exact source is disputed.

According to Godel, abstracted away (clipped) from one Iranian borrowing, namely թագուրհի (tʿagurhi, queen), and propagated afterwards. In թագուրհի (tʿagurhi) the ending may go back to Old Iranian *-br̥θrya f (carrying)Middle Iranian *-wrhri. An alternative proposal is the derivation from Iranian -purhi. Has also been compared with աւրի- (awri-) in աւրիորդ (awriord).
