First attested in the Hunmin jeongeum haerye (訓民正音解例 / 훈민정음해례), 1446, as 붇 (Yale: pwut). A nativised borrowing from Chinese 筆／笔 (bǐ, “writing brush, writing instrument, pen”). Sino-Korean: 필 (pil).
