Simplified from 鰻 (魚 → 鱼).

In current form, Phono-semantic compound (形聲) : semantic 魚 ‎(“fish”) + phonetic 曼 ‎(OC *moːn, *mons) – a kind of fish. Note that 曼 has meaning of “long”, hence connotations of “a long fish, an eel”.
