Etymology

Source unknown. Since the original sound value of ⰼ approximated /d͡ʑ/, it was used to render the Byzantine Greek pronunciation of palatalized [gʲ] in such borrowings as ⰼⰵⱀⱁⰰ ‎(đenoa, “****”) (from Greek γεέννα ‎(geénna)) as well as the reflexes of Proto-Slavic */d'/ in the Western South Slavic medieval texts.
