Etymology

From Proto-Georgian-Zan *šw-il-, derived from Proto-Kartvelian verbal stem *šw-, *šew- (to give birth) (whence also შობა (šoba), შვა (šva), პირმშო (ṗirmšo), ნაშობი (našobi)) by adding the participate affix *-il, hence, it can be viewed as a past participle of შობა (šoba). In some dialectal forms, the (v) has evolved into (u), yielding შუილი (šuili). The Zan forms regularly correspond to Georgian, although the original (v) there is lost and an irregular change k < has taken place.
