From Proto-Georgian-Zan *ḳb-il-, which is the past-participle form of a very early formation ending in *-il based on the Proto-Georgian-Zan verb stem *ḳb-, which is the common ancestor of words pertaining to the oral cavity and eating such as კბენა (ḳbena, to bite (anything but food)) and კბეჩა (ḳbeča, to bite (implying food)).
