स्मृ (√smṛ)

  1. cl.1 P. (Dhātup. xxii, 35) स्मरति (mc. also °ते ; pf. सस्मार, सस्मर्थ, सस्मरुः MBh. R. &c. ; aor. अस्मार्षीत्, °षुः ib. ; fut. स्मर्ता, स्मरिष्यति ib. ; inf. स्मर्तुम् ib. ; ind.p. स्मृत्वा GṛṠrS. ; स्मरित्वा MBh. ; -स्मृत्य, स्मारम् [q.v.] ib. &c.), to remember, recollect, bear in mind, call to mind, think of, be mindful of (gen. or acc. ; the action remembered is expressed by a p.p. or an impf. with यद्, ‘that’, or by a fut. without यद् ; the fut. may stand with यद्, if there are two actions ; cf. Pāṇ. 2-3, 52 ; iii, 2, 112 &c.).
  2. to remember or think of with sorrow or regret.
  3. to hand down memoriter, teach, declare.
  4. to recite Hcat. : Pass. स्मर्यते (aor. अस्मारि ; Prec. स्मृषीष्ट or स्मरिषीष्ट), to be remembered or recorded or declared (as a law) or mentioned in the स्मृति (with न, ‘to be passed over in silence’).
  5. to be declared or regarded as, pass for (nom. or loc.) Āpast. Kāṡ. : Caus. स्मारयति (rarely स्मरयति ; mc. also Ā. ; aor. असस्मरत् ; Pass. स्मार्यते), to cause to remember or be mindful of or regret MBh. R. &c. (cf. Pāṇ. 1-3, 67 Sch.)
  6. to remind any one of (two acc. or acc. and gen. or rarely gen. of person) MBh. Kāv. &c.: Desid. सुस्मूर्षते (Pāṇ. 1-3, 57), to wish to remember Bhaṭṭ. : Intens. सास्मर्यते or सास्मर्ति Gr. ([cf. Gk. μέρμερος ; Lat. memor, mora.])
